How to Tune a Ukulele
Tuning your ukulele is the first step to making beautiful music. The standard ukulele tuning is G-C-E-A (from the string closest to your face to the string closest to the floor when holding the ukulele in playing position).
Unlike a guitar where strings go from low to high, the ukulele uses re-entrant tuning — the G string (string 4) is actually tuned higher than the C string (string 3). This gives the ukulele its distinctive bright, happy sound.
How to Use This Ukulele Tuner
- Select your tuning from the dropdown menu (Standard GCEA is selected by default).
- Click the microphone button and allow microphone access when prompted.
- Pluck a single string on your ukulele. The tuner will automatically detect which string you're playing.
- You can also tap a specific string button to tune that string. The tuner will show how sharp or flat you are from the target note.
- Turn the tuning peg until the indicator is centered and the status shows "In Tune."
- Repeat for each string until your ukulele is fully in tune.
Understanding Ukulele Tuning
Standard (GCEA) — The most common tuning for soprano, concert, and tenor ukuleles. The high G (G4) creates the classic ukulele sound. Most ukulele songs and tutorials assume this tuning.
Low G — Identical to standard except the G string is tuned down an octave to G3. This gives you a wider range for fingerpicking and more complex arrangements. Requires a special wound low G string.
Baritone (DGBE) — Used on baritone ukuleles, which are larger and produce a deeper sound. The tuning matches the top four guitar strings, making it easy for guitarists to transition to ukulele.
